Fuel Efficiency

Efficiency Upgrade is a solution that delivers significant fuel efficiency, saving up to 5 grams per kilowatt hour at high load. These substantial efficiencies contribute to a typical return on investment in just 1.5 to 2 years, while also reducing GHG emissions and extending turbocharger maintenance intervals.

  • Turbocharger upgrade matched to engine's operating profile
  • New camshaft sections enabling Miller timing
  • Optimization targeting high-load operation (70% and above)

The Cylinder Bypass Valve (CBV) retrofit is designed to maximize fuel efficiency by allowing the engine to run at variable speed. Engine speed is reduced by a defined percentage, or the engine operates in an extended combinator mode. This lowers the required power while maintaining vessel speed, offering up to a 20% reduction in fuel consumption. This improvement also positively impacts the IMO Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating.

  • Electropneumatic actuator for precise control
  • Configured for constant pressure charging and part-load / slow-steaming profiles

Available for controllable pitch propeller (CPP) systems, Combinator Mode Optimization provides approximately 8% power savings while maintaining the same ship speed. This ensures a fast return on investment. Even better, these benefits are achieved without the need for any component replacement.

  • New power limit curve tuned to CPP characteristics
  • Documentation update for operational clarity
  • Alarm system adjustment for safe operation

This retrofit improves fuel efficiency for M 43 C engines, with the greatest benefits achieved during high‑load operation. By combining optimized turbocharger components with camshaft sections enabling Miller timing, the solution reduces fuel consumption and, as a result, lowers CO₂ emissions. Performance gains vary by engine configuration and operating profile.

  • Turbocharger components optimized for M 43 C engines
  • Camshaft sections enabling Miller timing
  • Designed for high‑load operation (typically above 75% load)

Safety Enhancements

Additional Exhaust Pipe Insulation is designed to enhance personnel safety by limiting exposure to hot exhaust system surfaces. The solution adds insulation covers to exhaust piping, helping reduce the risk of accidental contact during operation and maintenance while maintaining compatibility with existing engine configurations.

  • Additional insulation covers for exhaust tubes
  • Installed using clamps with existing cladding remaining in place
  • Compatible with constant pressure and pulse charging systems

Splash Protection for Low-Pressure Fuel System is an installation that greatly increases safety for both equipment and personnel by reducing the risk of fires and injuries associated with fuel leaks. This protection also ensures compliance with Unattended Machinery Space (UMS) requirements.

  • Splash protection shells with quick-release fasteners
  • Provision of a spare parts kit for service readiness

The Upgrade Kit for your Standard Lubricating Oil Filter is a modification that offers several benefits, including continuous oil cleaning even when the engine is at a standstill. Additionally, it delivers a longer filter service life, a decreased risk of bearing damage, and extended oil change intervals.

  • Centrifugal filter for continuous oil cleaning
  • Modified indicator strainer
  • Feed pump integration
  • Differential pressure gauge for condition awareness

With additional Charge Air Cooler Insulation, the radiant heat temperature is significantly reduced, thanks to an additional insulation layer that creates a powerful heat shield beneath the charge air cooler. This enhancement can lower the surface temperature of the installed cover plate to as low as 60°C, depending on operational conditions. The reduction ensures superior thermal management and contributes to system longevity and reliability.

  • Additional insulation layer for enhanced heat shielding
  • Located in the bottom area of the charge air cooler
  • Reduces cover plate surface temperature potentially to 60°C
  • Available for block coolers installed on the VM 43 engine type

Operation Improvement

The Crankshaft Bearing Condition Monitoring System is a passive monitoring system that uses the thermoelectric effect to detect temperature rise in crankshaft bearings. The system provides early warning before a temperature rise escalates into damage, leading to improved reliability across diverse applications. Installation is fast and requires no machining for commissioning. Available both on and off shore across all segments.

  • Sensor and evaluator hardware
  • Passive system with no external power needs at the sensing point
  • Logger and software for trend tracking

A differential pressure gauge offers a simple, reliable way to monitor system condition and contamination levels in real time. As pressure changes across the component, it clearly signals when buildup is beginning to restrict flow, allowing cleaning to be performed before performance is affected. With this early visibility, maintenance can be scheduled proactively, helping prevent unplanned downtime and keeping equipment operating efficiently.

Charge air cooler temperature control helps protect critical engine components by maintaining consistent intake air conditions. By reducing thermal stress and buildup, it extends the service life of valve spindles, valve seat inserts, cylinder liners, pistons, and piston rings. More stable temperatures also limit contamination of the lubricating oil, increasing oil life and supporting reliable performance. In addition, minimizing condensation within the charge air cooler enhances operational safety, an important advantage when operating under high loads or in hot, humid climates.

Governor Modernization is the replacement of obsolete certain governors with modern control solutions for better reliability. The replacement ensures reduced downtime by future-proofing the engine control architecture.

  • Complete retrofit kit for governor replacement
  • Improved governor speed and control stability
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
